First Touch & Bliss Care Coordinator Launch

Another update today. This time pictures from a launch event from the charities First Touch and Bliss who were celebrating the creation of a new care coordinator role which will provide support for families of premature and sick babies in southwest London. BBC newsreader and presenter Sophie Raworth, who is one of the patrons of First Touch, was present as special guest to officially open the event celebrating the appointment of Bobbie Everson and Lyndsey Hookway. Socialite Bar Preview Night

Back in October, I was commissioned to take pictures at the preview night of a new private members bar based in Muswell Hill, called the Socialite Bar. The pictures have since been incorporated into a recent redesign of their website, which you can check out via the link above, but I've included a few snaps below, including some very tempting cocktails!

Macmillan Cancer Support Centre Opening at St George’s Hospital

I'll be catching up with updating this blog with work I did over September and October for the next few days. First update are pictures from the official opening of a new Macmillan information and support centre at St George's Hospital back in September. It was officially opened by Cllr Mrs Jane Cooper, Mayor of Wandsworth and Chris Cotton, chief executive of the Royal Albert Hall (pictured above). St George's Graduation Ceremony

This was my third year photographing the St George's University of London graduation ceremony at the Barbican. Just like with my wedding photography, the event runs pretty much exactly the same but there are always new things to look out for... be it snazzily dressed graduates, such as the guy below in the silver suit, synchronised mortar board arranging or candid shots of proud parents and graduates.

St George's Community Open Day

The last 3 months has been pretty busy for me, so I'm using this quiet night in to catch up on updating both of my photography websites. This post is about a job I did back in June, taking photographs of St. George's community open day. It was a well attended event with lots of families visiting the stalls set up by both hospital and university staff. Each stall had various learning processes of the human body, and the opportunity to take part in experiments. The event was also attended by local MP for Tooting, Sadiq Khan who was one of several speakers. In between shots I had a go at getting my blood pressure taken (all clear!) and testing my grip strength, which was also all clear. Somewhat reassuring given I spend many hours holding my camera! Platform Bar & Restaurant's 1st Birthday

Last week I was back at Platform Bar & Restaurant to photograph their first birthday party. I was there last year covering their opening night so it was nice to be back again. Like all good parties there was plenty of food and drink to go around. Tasty samples from their British produce menu were on offer along with hand crafted cocktails to wash it all down. The entertainment was provided by their nominated charity XLP. There are some more pictures from the evening in the client section.

1980s reunion night

This extended bank holiday weekend (thanks Kate and Will!) I will be mostly catching up with some much needed updating of this website. First off are some photographs from a job I did for St. George's University of London back in November last year, photographing their 80s Alumni reunion evening. It was a very well attended event with around 200 guests, and besides from the usual milling around catching up with familiar faces, and looking at memorabilia there was also an evening meal with guest speakers. I didn't stay much longer than that, but apparently all manner of shapes were being thrown in the 80s disco way into the small hours of the night! Happy New Year to you and all that jazz! As part of embracing new things for the new year, I recently signed up to Twitter, and if you're that way inclined you can follow me on there by clicking the button below. Given that whenever I update this blog the posts tend to be very short, Twitter might be the ideal format for me. Guess we'll have to wait and see! In the next few weeks I'll be completing my photography display over at Harrison's, as I have some more space to play with there and will post some pictures once I've finished.

Exhibition at Harrisons

The "surreal line" resumed normal exhibition service this weekend pulling in at Harrison's after almost a year of being out of service. What with moving house three times in the last year (!) and kicking off a separate website for my wedding photography, finding the time to locate a venue in South London took a lot longer than I'd imagined. I finally found the right venue after receiving a tip off from a friend that Harrison's in Balham, were interesting in showcasing local artists or photographers. I'd been trying to find a venue in South London, that might be interested in hosting my photography for an ongoing basis, and I'm really pleased to report that Harrison's is that venue. The mezzanine level of the restaurant is an excellent area for displaying photography, and Sam the owner has been great with suggestions I've made for expanding the exhibition area onto other walls. There are 15 pictures from my "surreal line" project are on show, and all things going well, the "surreal line" will be on exhibition there for a good few months!

Wedding Portfolio

Over the last couple of years, through word of mouth I've shot a few weddings alongside my usual photography. I've really enjoyed doing them, particularly when I've been able to apply my usual style to the events of the big day and this is something I'm interested in doing more of. This is why I've set up a brand new website - www.ozkizilphotography.com for displaying my wedding work so far. If you're an avid facebook user, then feel free to join the page I've set up there. I'm on the lookout for more weddings, so if you know of anyone whose after a more natural approach to documenting their big day then point them in my direction!

The Surreal Line by Yusuf Ozkizil | Make Your Own Book

I've entered my photography book "The Surreal Line" in a book competition run by Blurb called "photography book now". The book contains a series of images that feature chance encounters on the London Underground, between static billboards and the hustle and bustle of the world around them.

I'm hoping to drum up some support in the "people's choice" category where the winners are decided by the popular vote. Voting is still open and will remain so until 20th August. As is the way with these things you need to set up an account with Blurb in order to vote, and although the process is somewhat longwinded, it's relatively simple if you persevere through the steps. Any votes much appreciated!

Mary & Neil's wedding

Back in late July, I was wedding photographer for Mary and Neil. The ceremony was held at Wandsworth Registry office, followed by a reception over at Mitcham Golf Course. Luckily for this time of year the unpredictable British "summer" behaved itself, and despite the clouds a sunny finish was had!

St George's Graduation Ceremony

I was commissioned again by St. George's University of London, to take pictures during the graduation ceremony held at the Barbican, on Thursday 15th July. St George's are building up their image library of graduation pictures, and some of my photos will end up being used in promotional materials. As and when these become available I'll post scans. The graduation itself was very well attended, and with the Barbican at near capacity, and the lack of any air conditioning it was a very stuffy, sweltering experience for staff, students, parents and not to mention this photographer! Here are some of my favourite photos from the day.

I was commissioned to take pictures at a corporate event organised by TeamLondonBridge on HMS Belfast. I've never been on a warship before, let alone a floating museum, so something of an unexpected 2-4-1 bonus.

Platform Bar & Restaurant opening night

I was commissioned to take pictures of the opening night festivities at Platform, Tooley street's newest bar restaurant. It was such a well attended night that I found it difficult to move between the two floors, such was the volume of punters eager to get a taste of the delicious looking nibbles on offer. Some pictures feature on their website and facebook fan page.

Blossom photoshoot

Pretty unusual assignment taking pictures of an old cow on behalf of St. George's University of London. Not just any old cow, but Blossom the cow used in Edward Jenner’s vaccination experiments. Blossom has been displayed on the wall of the library at St. George's for quite a while, but was given temporary release for samples to be taken for some tests.

The Surreal Line - Blurb book

I won a competition run by Blurb, back in November, and decided to use the prize vouchers to produce proof copies of a "surreal line" book, in both softback and hardback covers. I was quite intrigued as to what these pictures would like compiled together as a book, and I'm really quite impressed with the professional look and finish Blurb put into these print on demand books. So much so, that I've decided to make the book "public" and available for anyone to buy, should they so wish. It contains my favourite photographs from the series and clocks in at about 40 pages long. I have to personally admit preferring the look and feel of the hardback version, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Time Out tearsheet

I was commissioned by Time Out London to get pictures for a piece in the classical section about introducing children to the opera. The photo shoot ended up being quite playful, including a number of boisterous tug of war shots, with the children being dragged into the Royal Opera House. These photos are in this week's issue (31 Dec - 6 Jan 10) and the article can be read online here.

One of my photos has been included in a new book by Martin Parr and Joachim Schmid. The two photographers mimic each others styles, with Schmid taking photos in the spirit of Martin Parr, and Parr collecting "Parr-like" images (Schmid primarily orchestrates other peoples pictures into collections). Martin Parr selected my photo of the "baby messiah" for his section of the book. The book can be previewed and purchased from Blurb here.

Mario's cafe show closes

The "surreal line" exhibition has finally ended it's stay in Kentish Town. The northbound trip started off at Flaxon Ptootch, back in October, then took a short stop down the road to Kelly Street, for a stay at Mario's cafe. I've posted a few photos here of the set up before I packed the show away last Friday. I think this has probably been my favourite place I've shown my photographs. The cafe is quite narrow, and what with the only window being right at the front entrance any artwork or photography exhibited there really becomes quite a focal point. I'm now looking for a venue in South London to host the show, for what possibly might be it's last outing.

One of my tube photos was selected as one of five winning entries chosen by Blurb in a tube pics competition run by Going Underground. I'll be getting a voucher to create my own Blurb book, which I'll most likely use to produce a book of my "surreal line" pictures. Apparently, the London Transport Museum liked a number of the entries, and may use some in an upcoming exhibit. If any develops with that I'll post more details on this page.
